Recycled Cashmere Sweater Christmas Stocking & Gift Bags

By Lorraine

Recycled, cashmere sweater Christmas, reusable gift bags are useful and so pretty. Easy instructions to make using thrift store knitted sweaters. I found a sweater in a hand-me-down bag of clothes that was looking less than lovely. It had some pilling, I still couldn’t toss it away. Much of the beautiful cashmere was still in great condition and so soft and luxurious. With a little cutting and sewing I made recycled, cashmere sweater Christmas stocking and gift bags from it. The stocking is decorative and the gift bags are useful, so pretty and can be used over and over.

I am not a skilled seamstress but even I was able to create the stocking and gift bags. Look through your drawers for sweaters you or your family no longer wear. Check out the local thrift store for more options. Use the guidelines below and recycle old sweaters into lovely holiday items.

Recycled Cashmere Sweater Christmas Stocking

I made the Christmas stocking following this patchwork Christmas stocking pattern.

Instead of adding a separate cuff, I cut the stocking longer at the top and let the ribbed edge fold over the stocking body.

I made a lining using fabric salvaged from a worn pillow case and hemmed the top edge then hand stitched it to the top of the stocking. (you can see the stitching in the photo below) The hanging loop was also hand stitched from sweater scraps, and just for fun, I snipped the label from the sweater and tacked it onto the back of the stocking.

When machine stitching the sweater front and back, I used longer stitches, a little looser tension, lots of pins and stitched slowly to avoid puckering and bunching.

Recycled Cashmere Sweater Gift Bags

Use a recycled, cashmere sweater from the thrift shop or your closet to make useful and lovely Christmas gift bags. Easy instructions for holiday decorating and gift-giving.
With lots of life in the sweater sleeves, I made some cute little gift bags. One of the bags was made using the ribbing from the waist part of the sweater. Depending on the size of the sweater and the size of the items you are creating, you can make multiple items.

1 From wrong side, cut sleeve to the length you want, pin and stitch the bottom. (A long bag would be perfect for gifting a bottle of wine)

2   Turn bag right side out. If you want your bag to stand up on its own, you can cut a piece of cardboard with rounded corners and place in the bottom.

3 If desired, you can stitch the bottom ends to eliminate the pointy bottom but you don’t need to.

4 Fill with your gift (or fiberfill if using for decorations) and tie closed with pretty ribbons.  The taller bag in the back was made using a piece of the sweater left over from bottom edge of the sweater.

What a cute idea that is, Lorraine. I'm now wishing I hadn't passed up a too-worn cashmere sweater in a local thrift shop. I love the little gift bags.
