What Time Will then Remain

By Lorraine

How easy it is to focus on the hard and difficult things that face us each day and fall into a pattern of complaining even if it is just in our own thoughts. The little annoyances, the circumstances we have no control over and situations that seem overwhelming can cause us to forget the many blessings we enjoy.

I think this is why I resonate with these words by RC Trench.

When thou hast thanked thy God
For every blessing sent,
What time will then remain
For murmurs or lament?

About RC Trench

Richard Chenevix Trench, born in Dublin, Ireland. was an Anglican archbishop and poet. Born September 1807 and died March 1886, he is buried in Westminster Abbey.

In the centre part of the nave of Westminster Abbey is the grave of Richard Chenevix Trench, Dean of Westminster, writer and poet. The inscription was written by Dean Church and the Latin can be translated:

“In memory of Richard Chenevix Trench, Dean of this church for 7 years, Archbishop of Dublin for 21 years, who, captivated by the love of eternal truth in Christ, sang of its most holy beauty in his poetry and illuminated it in his expositions, and, in times of joy, in times of trouble, living and dying, he devoted himself to it with a singular and unimpaired faithfulness. His family erected this monument in thankfulness to God. He died in the year of salvation 1886, aged 78”. source

Richard’s words remind me to focus on the good God pours into my life each day and not to take for granted the abundant blessing that are mine everyday.

Though prone to be like the first mentioned in another one of Trench’s writings, my goal is to reflect the heart attitude of the latter. To foster gratitude and remembrance.

The old hymn, Count Your Blessings challenges us to make a conscious effort, to open our eyes and take notice of the good, the happy, the pleasant, the joyful moments that are there if we just take a closer look.

Count Your Blessings

Johnson Oatman, Jr. pub.1897

When upon life’s billows you are tempest-tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.
Refrain:
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God has done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
*Count your many blessings, see what God has done.
[*And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.]
Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly,
And you will keep singing as the days go by.
When you look at others with their lands and gold,
Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;
Count your many blessings—*money cannot buy [*wealth can never buy]
Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.
So, amid the conflict whether great or small,
Do not be discouraged, God is over all;
Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.

Let all that I am praise the LORD; may I never forget the good things he does for me.
Psalm 103:2

Something I work on every day … staying positive, focusing on gratitude, and limiting the negatives in life (whether that be people or situations).

As I've grown up I've realized how much there is to be grateful for, even on the darker days. I wish I'd learned this lesson much earlier in my life.

Yes it's far to easy to get caught up in the negatives. These are very wise words and agood reminder
