What is an air fryer?

There is always a new gadget or appliance that comes along and becomes popular. The latest seems to be the air fryer. Essentially, an air fryer is an amped-up countertop convection oven. It doesn’t actually fry your food, but gives similar results of deep-frying using just hot air with little or no oil.

How does an air fryer work?

After placing your food in a fryer-style basket of a preheated unit, hot air rushes down and around the food. This rapid circulation makes the food crisp, much like deep-frying, but without the oil. Using hot air, it creates crispy fried foods with less fat than deep frying without sacrificing flavor.

Is cooking in an air fryer healthier?

Since air fryers require a fraction of the oil that deep fryers need, you can have a more healthful meal that has similar flavors and textures.  You can get similar healthful results when roasting, grilling, slow-cooking, or pan-searing chicken but these other cooking methods do not result in the fried crispy texture that an air fryer provides.

Various air fryer types

There are many brands and styles of air fryers on the market. Because I don’t want additional appliances to store and a limited amount of counter space, I opted for a multi-function appliance. One oven appliance with many ways to cook that includes an air fryer in addition to baking, broiling, toasting, convection and rotisserie settings.

As you can see in the photo below, my appliance may look different from single function air fryers you have seen. I am pleased with the results and love the way it air fries.

How to make honey garlic air fryer chicken thighs

Ingredients for easy skinless, boneless chicken thighs made in the air fryer. Asian

Here are the ingredients needed.

Prepping the chicken thighs

Trimming fat from chicken for honey ginger chicken thighs made in the air fryer.

It is optional, but I like to cut off the extra fat from the chicken thighs using kitchen shears before cooking.

Preparing the marinade

Adding soy sauce for honey ginger air fryer chicken thighs.

To a shallow dish, add 1/4 cup soy sauce, 1 tablespoon minced garlic, 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar, 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger and 1 tablespoon brown sugar.

Add 1 tablespoon honey.

Adding Asian Zing chili pepper sauce to marinade for air fryer chicken thighs.

And 1 teaspoon Wild Wings Asian Zing Chili pepper sauce or your favorite buffalo sauce.

Marinating skinless, boneless chicken thighs for cooking in the air fryer.

Add the chicken and turn to coat with the marinade. Allow the chicken to marinate about 4 hours, turning occasionally. You can marinate for as little as 1 hour but the flavors will not permeate the chicken as deeply as if marinated longer.

Baking the air fryer chicken thighs

Remove the chicken thighs from the marinade allowing the extra to dip off and place on the air fryer basket leaving space between the pieces. Dispose of the marinade.

Preheat air fryer to 370 degree. Cook chicken in the air fryer for 15 mins. Turn and cook for an additional 15 mins or until the chicken reaches an internal temp of 165F. degrees.

NOTE: Air fryers are different. Using my appliance, I line the bottom pan with foil to catch the drippings allowing for easy clean up and avoiding flare-ups. Follow the directions for your particular air fryer.

Perfectly cooked, tender and juicy chicken thighs!

High protein for meal prep

I love using air fried chicken as part of weekly lunchtime meal prepping. It is a great protein source that goes so well with rice, pasta, mashed potatoes, couscous, or a green salad.
