A great dinner doesn't have to be complicated. Make pork chops baked in the oven with no messy frying, with homemade shake and bake coating.  A moist and tender chop full of flavor in no time.
Don’t let the ease of preparation fool you. The shake and bake coating on these boneless chops keeps them moist and flavorful. Serve with rice or mashed potatoes for a date-night worthy meal that takes less than 30 minutes.

Preparing shake and bake coating

Sure, it is easy to pick up a box of shake and bake from the grocery store. I have bought it and like how it tastes. But just for some breadcrumbs and dried spices it has a hefty markup. It takes just a few minutes to make at home and it doesn’t have anything in it that you’d prefer to keep out. Plus you probably already have everything you need in your pantry.

Homemade Shake and Bake Coating

(For pork chops or chicken)

slightly adapted from Allrecipes

PRINT RECIPE
Half of this recipe coats 6-8 pork chops

INGREDIENTS:
  • 2 cups dry bread crumbs
  • 3 1/2 Tbs. vegetable oil
  • 1/2 Tbs. salt
  • 1/2 Tbs. paprika
  • 1/2 Tbs. celery seed
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1/4 teaspoon minced onion
  • 1 pinch dried basil leaves
  • 1 pinch dried parsley
  • 1 pinch dried oregano
  • 6-8 bone-in or boneless 1/2-inch pork chops
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

In a bowl or resealable plastic bag, combine the breadcrumbs, oil, salt, paprika, celery seed, pepper, garlic salt, minced garlic, minced onion, basil, parsley and oregano.

Stir and mix until evenly combined.

Wet each pork chop with water, shaking off excess. Dip pork chop into the coating mixture (or toss in a plastic bag), turning until completely covered.

Place coated pork chops onto a lightly sprayed, foil-lined baking sheet.

Bake in preheated oven until done and coating is golden brown, about 15-20 minutes.

To use shake and bake coating for chicken:

The shake and bake coating is delicious for chicken. If you are making boneless chicken, bake about 20 minutes at an oven temperature of 400 degrees.

For chicken on the bone, bake about 45 minutes at a temperature of 400 degrees until juices run clear.

Safe Storage:

This recipe can easily be halved or doubled. Spoon desired amount of mixture into a bowl for coating meat or poultry. Dispose of any extra coating that was used with the pork chops. Unused shake and bake coating can be kept in a small freezer bag or glass jar and placed in the freezer for up to three months for another use. I have read the coating can be stored in the pantry but I prefer to keep it in the refrigerator or freezer.

I’ve always liked using shake and bake for both chicken and pork chops. I would definitely try this instead of paying the price for the store bought stuff. How easy to mix this up and convenient since I have all that stuff on hand most of the time.

Instead of vegetable oil, could I use olive oil?

        Hi Kathie,

Sure, olive oil will work just fine.
