Amish Peanut Butter Spread

By Lorraine

Easy to make recipe for Amish Peanut Butter Spread. Sweet, creamy and great on bread, toast, crackers and apple slices.  This delicious Amish Peanut Butter Spread was just a small part of a delightful day celebrating John’s birthday.  The day included a trip to Lancaster to see a play with precious friends and dinner in a lovely Amish home.  On the table was Amish Peanut Butter Spread.  What a delicious treat!

When John heard that Moses was playing at Sight & Sound Theater and because it has been years since we had been there, he decided that was how he wanted to spend the day. Knowing my blogging friend, Judy (Just a Little Something for You) and her husband, John, lived nearby, I sent her an email asking if they were free that day and wanted to spend the day with us. We were super happy that they could, remembering how much we enjoyed their company during other times we’ve been with them.

We waited in the beautiful lobby for Judy and John to arrive. The Moses production was wonderful and we all enjoyed the story, scenery, costumes, animals and performances.

(photo above and below were sent to me from Judy as were others below.  Thank you, Judy, for sharing!)
Judy was able to arrange for us to share a delicious meal in the cozy home of a sweet Amish couple. Suzanne served a hearty salad with two dressings, chicken with honey mustard sauce, incredibly good succotash and roasted potatoes. I can tell you, the meal was perfect in every way.

The guys conversing… probably about cars 🙂

A most lovely Valentine’s Day themed table set for us to enjoy good food, the warmth of a cozy and inviting home and sweet fellowship with friends. Though very cold outside, there were abundant blessings inside.

Judy brought along a delicious and adorable baby bundt cake for both John and Ruthie who were both celebrating birthdays. So thoughtful and fun!

A special joy was meeting new friends. Ruthie and Vernon are life-long friends of Judy and John, and just as I expected, are a sweet and friendly couple.

It was a perfect day to celebrate this dear guy!
Happy Birthday to my beloved!

Amish Peanut Butter Spread

Easy to make recipe for Amish Peanut Butter Spread. Sweet, creamy and great on bread, toast, crackers and apple slices.
Amish Peanut Butter, sometimes known as, Church Spread, is common among the Mennonite and Amish communities. It is sweet, creamy and a delicious treat that is great on everything from fresh baked bread, toast, crackers to slices of apples. Use it on anything you would spread with regular peanut butter.

Amish Peanut Butter Spread

from Suzanne

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 1/4 cups brown Sugar
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4-1/2 white Karo
  • 3/4 – 1 cup water

Bring to a full boil; simmer 5 minutes.  Cool 1 hour

Then add:

  • 1 1/4 lb. peanut butter
  • 3/4 – 1 cup King syrup*
  • 1/2 cup Marshmallow cream
  • 1/4 cup soft butter
I’ve been told refrigeration isn’t necessary, but I think this spread should be kept in the fridge, in an air-tight container.  Suzanne sent us each home with a container full.  I had to discipline myself not to eat it all before I made a batch of my own so I could compare it to hers.  I left a small amount on the counter in a covered container but after a week and a half, I noticed the consistency had changed a little. Perhaps because I left so little, there was lots of airspace in the container.

*Since King Syrup is not available in my grocery store, I had to find a substitute.  This is what I made:

King’s Syrup Substitute

1/2 cup corn syrup, 1/4 cup molasses, and 1/4 cup of a light-colored honey.

Did you know:

The Amish make their homes in rural areas in twenty-two U.S. states and Ontario, Canada. The states with the largest Amish populations are Ohio and Pennsylvania. The oldest Amish community (and the one most familiar to non-Amish) is made up of about 16,000 people living around Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The Amish living there are primarily Pennsylvania Dutch (people of German descent), but not all Pennsylvania Dutch are Amish.

Deutsch is the German-language word for German, so the name Pennsylvania Dutch comes from “Pennsylvania Deutsch.” The food of Pennsylvania Dutch and Amish are similar, due to their common German heritage. (source)

I really love the recipe shared by Suzanne but was curious, so I searched a little and found a few other recipes.  I haven’t tried any of them but found it interesting to compare recipes. Here are some links if you want to have a look:

Looks like a lovely celebration for John's birthday.
I don't know why but to me you put the word Amish in front of something and I just know it's going to be good 🙂
