You might remember that I am adding fish to our weekly menu even though I don’t like fish. I am trying different ways to serve it in hopes that I will find something I like. My family loves fish ~ me not so much.
In my quest to acquire a taste for fish, I made breaded and fried fish sticks using mild tasting tilapia.
In my quest to acquire a taste for fish, I made breaded and fried fish sticks using mild tasting tilapia.
My mom gave me a gigantic box of cornflakes cereal that contained double pouches inside. Looking for creative ways to use all of this cereal, I decided to crush some to use in place of breadcrumbs.
Following the usual procedure, I coated pieces of tilapia, cut into 1/2-inch by 2-3-inch sticks, in flour seasoned with a little paprika, salt and pepper, then into a beaten egg and finally into the cornflake crumbs.
I fried them in a small amount of vegetable oil until golden and served with tartar sauce, Spanish rice and crisp-tender fresh green beans. Those at our dinner table scoffed down the fish.
I enjoyed the sides 😉

I love fish but my favorite thing to do with it is to poach it or steam it. I comes out perfectly every time.
Then if you have any leftovers at all you can make up a chowder and throw it in at the last minute.

Bless your heart!!! Tilapia is my favorite fish!!!

Hi Lorraine,
It has to be really good and really fresh that's for sure! We have to eat it all too so I don't plan for leftovers…too fishy with time.
My favorite way to enjoy fish is when my guy grills it in a grill basket. Try kabobs this summer with halibut, salmon, or shrimp ;D

They look great! We eat a lot of fish. My hubby and boys are always bringing home a fresh catch.

This looks so good, I wonder if the cornflake crumbs takes away some of the fishy taste? Let me know if you can okay? I know that sounds funny, but there's some types of fish I can eat and others I can't…too fishy tastin'. I'm not much of a fish eater myself either…the only kind I can eat are the filets at Capt. D's lol!…Have you had it before? maybe I'll give the cornflake crumbs a try 🙂
Thanks for visiting me!
Big hugs,
Queenie

Sorry you didn't enjoy the fish. It actually looks great! But at least the sides were good!

Hi Lorriane, Yes, spinning IS relaxing (once you get the hang of it)…and there are different ways to feed the wool into the bobbin as the twist is being put into it. It takes a LOT of yarn to have enough yardage to be able to knit …say… a sweater though. But a scarf is more do-able yardage wise. I hope you get to try it sometime. =)

I'm not a big fish fan either, but I do like tilapia. I coat mine in egg & crumbs and bake it. Pretty good then…=) Yours looks good…and I love tartar sauce! I've begun making my own with lowfat mayo and about 1/4 cup relish…a dash of lemon juice and a tiny bit of salt to taste. Makes me feel like Julia Child….grin (to make it from scratch)

I don't like fish either! I can eat grilled or fried tilapia if I have to but it's not something I really want. Yours looks very good and the side dishes sound delicious too. As a southerner, we don't consider green beans cooked until after the third day!!! ha ha (Harriet will eat her green beans any old way!)

I hope you will post when you perfect the whole fish thing. I am a total flop with fish. I grew up eating lots of seafood….all fried. We don't really fry anymore, so I am lost. These fish sticks look yummy!

Lorraine,
that looks delicious…I love fish and always trying to find new ways to make it.
thanks so much!

Nice job with the cereal crumbs. I am a fish lover so find it hard to understand people not liking it. Have you tried salmon? It is much sweeter than other fish.

I've always loved fish. Baked or fried I'll eat it either way. One of our favorite meals here is baked cod. Those fish sticks look delicious and the cornflake coating reminds me of the way my mother used to cook

These look delicious. I love using cornflakes with chicken, we'll have to give it a try with fish. (we aren't good at eatting fish here, but we should add it to the menu more)

Lol…I love fish..well, like it a lot. BUT have never had tilapia that I liked. Those fish sticks look super YUM…I've never thought to use corn flakes! You've got me thinking now! I make fish sticks with salmon….next time I'll try the flakes! 🙂
PS – have you ever tried grilled Tuna? Marinated in teriyaki sauce? Doesn't have the fish feel or taste. And it's Delicious!

I admire how you are trying to like fish. And I think it's sweet how you still make fish for your family even when you don't like it. hehehe
I also experimented with crushed cornflakes this past weekend but I used chicken breast instead. I dipped them in seasoned sour cream and then in a good generous coating of cornflakes. I ended up baking them but I think frying them would have been better. I will try that next time. Needless to say, they were a huge family hit! 🙂

You poor thing; I hope fixing the fish is not hard for you too. You definitely know how to make and present fish, makes me hungry just looking at your beautiful photos! Thank you for stopping by and saying hello, I have missed everyone.

Hope you find something you like, maybe try it like chicken piccata, but with sole? It's good, and we aren't big fans of fish! My kids will like your recipe, looks delicious!

Like you, I do not enjoy fish! And Lent is coming so I will have to eat it.
I like cornflake crumbs on oven baked chicken, roll it around in some mayo, dredge in crushed flakes and seasonings and bake. Delicious!
Good for you, you keep trying!
