When Life Doesn’t Make Sense
There are times when we simply don’t understand what God is doing.
We’ve prayed, hoped, and tried to stay faithful, but things still feel uncertain. Maybe the diagnosis wasn’t what we expected, or a long-prayed-for answer hasn’t come. Maybe there’s a strained relationship, a personal loss, or just an ache that sits quietly in our heart.
During these seasons, it’s easy to feel confused or even a little discouraged. But it’s in these very moments that the words from a beautiful song come to mind:
The Comfort of a Song
“God is too wise to be mistaken.
God is too good to be unkind.
So when you don’t understand,
when you don’t see His plan,
when you can’t trace His hand…
trust His heart.”
Those lyrics, from the song Trust His Heart, have comforted many hearts through the years, including mine. Sometimes I’ve played the song on repeat during hard weeks, letting the words settle deep into my spirit. They remind me that even when nothing makes sense, God is still who He’s always been, loving, sovereign, and kind.

He Sees What We Cannot
God sees the full picture. He knows what we can’t. And though He doesn’t always give us the answers we want right away, He always gives us Himself. His presence. His peace. His faithfulness in the waiting.
Isaiah 55:8–9 says,
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord.
“As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Trusting God in the Waiting
If you’re in a place of not knowing, I hope you find comfort here. You can rest in the truth that God is not careless with your life. He’s holding the whole story—even the chapters that don’t make sense yet.
So when you can’t trace His hand… trust His heart.
The Story Behind “Trust His Heart”
The comforting words of Trust His Heart have reached countless hearts, but many may not know the rich story behind the song, and the spiritual legacy that shaped it.
Who Wrote Trust His Heart?
Trust His Heart was written by gospel artist Babbie Mason and songwriter Eddie Carswell. Babbie shared in an interview that the inspiration for the song came from the words of famed preacher Charles Haddon Spurgeon, words that continue to speak life and encouragement to many.
Babbie Yvett Robie Wade Mason was born February 1, 1955. She is an American gospel singer, songwriter, author, and adjunct professor of songwriting at Point University and Lee University. She also hosts a television talk show. Raised in a deeply spiritual home, Babbie comes from at least five generations of ministers. Her father was a Baptist pastor, and she faithfully served as church pianist and choir director under his leadership.
That heritage of faith, prayer, and perseverance is beautifully woven into her music—especially in a song like Trust His Heart, which speaks so directly to the soul.
Where the Lyrics Came From
The lyrics to Trust His Heart were inspired by words often traced back to Charles Spurgeon:
“God is too wise to be mistaken. God is too good to be unkind. When you can’t trace His hand, trust His heart.”
These words have comforted many through seasons of sorrow and uncertainty. They’re a reminder that even when we don’t understand, we’re held by a God who does.
