The Swing, at the Playground with MomMom and Great Grandmother

By Lorraine

The Swing
by Robert Louis Stevenson

How do you like to go up in a swing,
Up in the air so blue?
Oh, I do think it the pleasantest thing
Ever a child can do!

Up in the air and over the wall,
Till I can see so wide,
River and trees and cattle and all
Over the countryside–

Till I look down on the garden green,
Down on the roof so brown–
Up in the air I go flying again,

Up in the air and down!

Tired, sweaty, dirty and wanting…
second lunch!

Your first and third brought tears to my eyes. I can hear the laughs and giggles on the swing – oh the sound of a child's laughter and joy! True music!

The third is just plain precious! I have a photo of my two oldest when they 2 and 3 (17 months apart) at Appomatox Couthouse in Virginia, holding hands like that. It brought good memories back to me!

thank you so much for sharing this poem. my grandmother would sing this song to us whenever we would swing on her porch swing and to this day, i can't swing on our porch swing without hearing her voice. i sing it to my grandchildren now, but have been very limited because i could only remember a few words. thanks to you i can now sing the entire song (my grandkids may not be as thankful, ha ha).
thank you for bringing back some delightful memories.

Lovely photos. I remember that poem about the swing. I had a book of poems by Robert Louis Stevenson as a child and the swing poem was in it. Valerie
