Reader Question:
How do I puncture through the fabric to add the floss row to begin crocheting the border?
Answer:
Great question! To begin crocheting a border on flannel, you’ll first need to make evenly spaced holes along the edge of the fabric. This allows you to insert your crochet hook and add the first row of floss (or crochet thread). Here’s how you can do it:
Use a Skip-Stitch Blade or Rotary Cutter with a Perforating Blade:
This is one of the easiest methods. A skip-stitch blade is a special rotary cutter attachment that creates evenly spaced holes as you run it along the fabric edge. It works well on flannel and fleece and helps make your stitches uniform.Pre-Poke Holes with a Sharp Needle or Awl:
If you don’t have a skip-stitch blade, you can use a sharp embroidery needle, awl, or even a pushpin to carefully poke small holes about ¼ inch apart and ¼ inch from the edge. You might want to mark them with a ruler and washable fabric pen to keep spacing even.Blanket Stitch with Floss (Optional):
Before crocheting, some people prefer to hand sew a blanket stitch around the edge using embroidery floss. This gives you a base row of stitches to work into and is a lovely handmade touch. You can then crochet into the tops of those stitches.Helpful Tip:
If the fabric is thick or difficult to pierce, try pre-washing it and using a thimble to protect your fingers while poking holes. Also, working on a soft surface (like a folded towel) underneath can help control your tool better.

I just finished blankets for 2 of my granddaughters using minky, cotton batting and a very soft cotton/sateen backing. Because the minky is so hard to sew on I am unable to add the satin I had wanted to add at one end of the blanket. With all that being said, I would like to know how you added the embroidery floss to start the edging. Did you have some type of tool to punch the necessary holes? This would be a perfect ending to these blankets! Thank you so much for any help you are able to give me!
(I also don’t understand “Website” below.) ♀️
Evelyn,
I’m sorry you’re having trouble with getting the holes through the fabric. Personally I was able to poke a sharp needle through but that can be hard. I did some research and added some suggestions to the post (see above). I also found 2 products with amazon links that would make it easier. I hope these will help you finish you blanket. Thanks,
Lorraine
Absolutely beautiful! I pray for a safe and healthy delivery too.

Truly lovely for the soon-to-be…
I am still trying to get the hang of crochet'. Still working at it and ripping out most of it. I seem to either drop stitches or increase them and have no idea how? You inspire us with your skills. I have photography for the most part down pat but this crochet' is stumping me.
Will be lifting up the family and for a healthy and speedy delivery.
I now know who you remind me of; its the actress Juliette Binoche. You both have such lovely soothing faces and smiles.
GOD bless and keep you all safe.
This is beautiful, Lorraine. I am sure you could have a booming business on Etsy, but it would be too much work from so many orders! Praying for that speedy delivery. xo
That's a lovely idea for a baby gift. Praying for a safe and healthy arrival.
