Tips & Variations
- Use processed peanut butter (like Jif or Skippy) for best results. Natural peanut butter can separate.
- Don’t add candy until the mixture is fully cooled to avoid melting the colors.
- For a nut-free version, use sunflower seed butter and allergy-friendly candies
- Candy can be swapped based on preference or season. Red and green M&Ms for Christmas, pastel candies for spring.
- For a gluten-free version, use certified GF cereal and pretzels.
- Try Crispix, Chocolate Chex, or Cinnamon Chex as fun cereal alternatives.
Storage & Make-Ahead Tips
- Keep your Puppy Chow fresh by storing it in an airtight container at room temperature. It’s best enjoyed within 5–7 days.
- For longer storage, freeze in freezer-safe containers for up to a month. Pop it in the freezer and bring it out before serving—it’s delicious chilled!
- Puppy Chow is a great make-ahead treat. Just stir in the candy before serving if freezing ahead of time.

How to Make Autumn Puppy Chow
Add the chocolate chips and the peanut butter to a 1-quart microwavable bowl.
Also add the butter.
Microwave, uncovered on high about 1 minute. Stir mixture. Microwave about 30 seconds more or until mixture is stirred smooth.
Add vanilla extract to melted chocolate mixture and stir until incorporated.
Pour chocolate mixture over cereal and mix gently until all cereal is covered.
Place cereal in a large 2-gallon size resealable food-storage plastic bag or divide and use two 1-gallon bags. Add the powdered sugar, seal and shake until all the cereal is well coated.
Dump the cereal mixture onto a silicon mat, parchment paper, or waxed paper-covered baking sheet.
Spread out into one layer and allow to cool.
When cool, place the Puppy Chow mixture into a large bowl and add your favorite pretzels and candy and gently toss.
Package puppy chow in individual treat bags and secure with string, ties or ribbon. I found my old canning funnel helpful when spooning into the bags. Or store the loose puppy chow in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
