Crunchy, crispy, salty, sweet, Autumn Puppy Chow is so easy to make and is so yummy to munch that it just might get you into frightful trouble! There are affiliate links in this post.
Also called Muddy Buddies, a bowlful is a tasty combination of Chex cereal, melted chocolate and peanut butter. Tossed with confectioners sugar, coating every crunchy morsel, it is an enchanting party treat. Stir in pretzels, colorful M&M’s and a splattering of candy corn, and you have a potion able to keep visiting ghouls and goblins from creating horrific havoc.
I promise, if you set out a bowl of autumn puppy chow, you will have some very happy party guests!
Nothing scary about autumn puppy chow
Gather the ingredients for puppy chow. Choose whatever you like for the stir-in additions. I made this batch with pretzels, autumn-colored M&M’s and candy corn.
Making Puppy Chow
Add the chocolate chips and the peanut butter to a 1-quart microwavable bowl.
Also add the butter.
Microwave, uncovered on high about 1 minute. Stir mixture. Microwave about 30 seconds more or until mixture is stirred smooth.
Add vanilla extract to melted chocolate mixture and stir until incorporated.
Pour chocolate mixture over cereal and mix gently until all cereal is covered.
Place cereal in a large 2-gallon size resealable food-storage plastic bag or divide and use two 1-gallon bags. Add the powdered sugar, seal and shake until all the cereal is well coated.
Dump the cereal mixture onto a silicon mat, parchment paper, or waxed paper-covered baking sheet.
Spread out into one layer and allow to cool.
When cool, place the Puppy Chow mixture into a large bowl and add your favorite pretzels and candy and gently toss.
Package puppy chow in individual treat bags and secure with string, ties or ribbon. I found my old canning funnel helpful when spooning into the bags. Or store the loose puppy chow in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
