When our youngest daughter moved into a place of her own, she left her bedroom a wee bit of a disaster. This creative girl had enough stuff to fill two bedrooms whilst working on her digital animation projects for college. It was full of computers, lighting, video and camera apparatus with room darkening curtains and nail holes in the walls too numerous to count.
It took days and lots of trash bags just to empty the room. But I was determined to reclaim the space and create something lovely. A DIY Bedroom makeover from messy teen room to Mom’s French Country retreat. A bright and beautiful place for reading, resting and relaxing and all done on a budget.

I have mentioned frequently here at GPTH that my favorite color is white. Bright white. I feel lighter and happier when surrounded with it. And, I love it because I can bring in or change up any accent color when neutral white is the backdrop.
And, I love aqua. Soft, pretty robins egg blue. The perfect blend between blue and green. I even painted our dining room and powder room a lovely shade of aqua.
Room Inspiration
When I received an email from Canvas on the Cheap and took a look at their site, I knew a large art canvas would be the perfect focal point for what I envisioned for this space. They gave me the option of any size canvas and I choose a 30-40-inch. There is no headboard on my bed leaving a large area to fill above the bed so this size is ideal.
Ordering from Canvas on the Cheap was so easy. Just a few clicks, really.
Once on Canvas on the Cheap, I clicked Get Started where I was prompted to upload a photo from my files or from Instagram. There is a nice selection of canvas sizes to choose from and it is easy to rotate or crop your image to get it just how you like. A few clicks and I added my order to my cart to check out.
I didn’t wait long as their turnaround time is short. My canvas arrived, very well packaged. Excitedly, I opened the box and I literally said, “Wow!” as I was truly pleased with the quality of the canvas. Canvas on the Cheap pricing is very reasonable and I have so many ideas for ordering additional canvases for my home and for gifts this holiday season.
From Canvas on the Cheap FAQ page:
Our prints are giclee prints that are printed with UL ECOLOGO and UL GREENGUARD GOLD Certified 1 Water-based HP Latex Inks. They are hazard free, have no HAPs, and are nickel free. The canvas is a polyester material. The finished product has a semi-gloss surface.
French Country Bedroom Makeover
So, the canvas was the starting point. I turned to a young friend for a paint color recommendation because I didn’t have the time or desire to research the many shades of white available. Tracey recently painted her home and I love the photos she shared. Trusting her opinion, I painted the walls with Sherwin Williams 7757 High Reflective White. The walls were painted and using the same color in a semi gloss finished, I painted the crown molding, surbases and doors. What a change and the perfect backdrop for pretty room.
Bedding
We switched out the twin bed that was in the room for a full size that was in the “Nursery” as our grandkids call it. A fluffy comforter, pillow shams and decorator pillows makes a comfy and inviting bed and pulls the colors together.
Curtains and accessories
The curtains have a pattern that adds interest and texture to the room but are still light and airy. I am planning to purchase a super comfy upholstered chair but a fresh coat of paint on this chair will due for now. I love the feathery throw tossed over the back. A gold accent table brings a little bling to the room and a perfect place to set a cup of coffee or tea.
With a lovely view from the window, this is a place I am looking forward spending many quiet moments.
What excites me the most about the room is a place to peacefully enjoy some of the things I most want to work on. Like learning to paint with watercolor, its been on my bucket list for a long time. Abbey and I even took a class together at a local high school a few years ago. This pretty setting might inspire me to commit more time to learning and creating.

Before and After
I was reluctant to share the before pic of the bedroom and even did so after initially posting. It took me quite a while to muster the courage to begin the project feeling overwhelmed by the mess. Once we emptied the room and began the process it all went quickly. The transformation was so amazing and I hope you are encouraged to tackle an area in your home that needs revitalizing. It is so worth it!

Where did you find those white pillows? I’ve been searching for something like that, and surprisingly coming up short.
Lorraine says
Hi Farrah, I purchased all of the pillows from HomeGoods. I found them at two different locations.
Hope this is helpful 🙂
