This certainly is not the prettiest room in our home but it sure does have lots of functions and helps with organization. I am showing you our garage, worts and all. Just as we live with it day in and day out.
Our home has ample living space but storage is a problem without having a basement.
We created some storage space in the garage using purchased wood (2×3’s, 2×4’s, particle board and Luan board) and wood-like boards that were being discarded by a neighbor. The storage units were built many years ago but I only got around to painting them recently.
Along one side of the garage, John built these storage cabinets. The bottom is open allowing room for trash cans, recycle cans, Paper Trash, Dog food container. There are also two cabinets up high that contain among other things, Easter and Thanksgiving DecorationsEntering the garage from the house and right on the left is for quick access to things we use frequently. We can reach items without even stepping out of the house. It is also where I temporarily stick things that I need to get out of the way or that will need my attention in the near future. It is like a pre-sorting zone 🙂

My favorite part of this storage cabinet is this great place to store large platters and trays.
The other side holds serving and decorative plates
It isn’t pretty but it sure makes it easy to get to an item I need.
Along the wall opposite the garage doors are three cubbies. When the girls were little these held their book bags, coats, boots, etc. (I couldn’t get all three cubbies in one photo so I morphed two photos together)
The other wall is where John has his big table saw and other wood cutting saws.
Since all of this storage space is around the perimeter of the garage, we can still fit a car inside. As you can see, there are still lots of touch-up that could be done.
But overall, it has helped tremendously in keeping the many items needed to run a household more easily, within easy reach and easy to put back.

Thank you for sharing your garage storage areas with us. You have inspired me and given me some ideas for the garage re-do we have started. We have some storage units to install and there are some built in that we inherited when we bought the house. You have given me some great ideas for using what's there and for adding a few spaces that would make things much easier to get to. I love the way you've stored your dishes – that's what I need to work on soon.

Thank you for your so lovely and generous comments about my mom's china, I'm very grateful. Yes, I love it too, since I do remember washing them when I was a teen, she would give me $5,00 after an invitation, she said they would brake in a dishwasher…at 14, in 1966, I loved getting the $5.00! So I'm going to cherrish whatever is left of it. Love the colour.

My guy is currently building shelving in our garage. I have taken the before shots as I like what he's come up with. Our new home is without a full basement and our garage is currently replacing our huge storage room, so there's lots of room for improvements. Thanks for sharing what you've come up with. I really like the back door holding area! Everyone needs a place or two like this.

We had a three car garage and within the 5 yrs we lived there I slowly forced our 2 cars out to the driveway with all my "to do" projects. Most of them I never got to and were either given away or sold at the garage sale we had before moving. So is life.
If we ever own our own home again, I hope I can keep my garage as organized as you.

Your organization skills are great…I am so impressed! Wow! We converted our garage into a family room….I'd do it again in a minute…it was always a train wreck for poor organization. My basement sewing room is now the storage area too. Gain a little, lose a little, but its been gain a lot of living space really, for us.
