Does this sweet Love is… cartoon bring back long-ago memories? When our love was new and young, I snipped these expressions of devotion and affection from the newspaper and added them to a scrapbook I kept of our every moment together.
You know… ticket stubs, wildflowers picked during picnics, little notes, matchbook covers from restaurants where we dined. Anything and everything that spoke of our enchanting love taped onto pages of a book with the outlook of forever in our hearts.
Forever
Forever, when you are seventeen and twenty-four, is very vague.
Love is…
We could never had anticipated the journey.
the better
the worse
the richer
the poorer
the sickness
the health
the children
the moves
the jobs
the loss of jobs
the friends
the work
the play
the heartaches
the joy
the losses
the gains
the grandchildren
the laughter
the tears
and everything in between
and here we are
thirty-nine years later
more in love than ever
still plugging along
growing old together
thanking the Lord
that he loved us first
and teaches us how to love one another.
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails
1 Corinthians 13:4-8

About the Cartoons
“Love is…” is a comic strip created by a New Zealand artist Kim Grove in the late 1960s. It began as a series of little love notes that Kim Grove drew for her future husband, Roberto Casali. Kim Casali died in June 1997. Since then, her son Stefano Casali has maintained the strip although it is always shown as “by Kim Casali” and signed “Kim” instead of Stefano. The first Love is… cartoon was published in the Los Angeles Times on January 5, 1970, where it has appeared ever since. (source no longer available)

Dear Lorraine,
Thank you for sharing all the Love Is ….. Love Notes! My husband and I were married at the Air Force base chapel February 12, 1971. Two weeks later he received orders for Vietnam. Thankfully, he did not leave until July giving us some time to be together before his departure. I cut out the Love Is ….. from the local newspaper and enclosed them in my letters to him everyday. He was overseas for 13 months. I numbered each letter so that he could read them in order. Of the 400+ letters, he received every one except two. A plane had been shot down in the China Sea about the time they should have arrived. Our son was 4 1/2 months old when he and his Dad met in person for the first time. Our 51st wedding anniversary will be February 12th. Congratulations on you 39th!

My husband used to send these to me inside each love letter he penned before we married. I loved them then and still do today. Sweet, tender, precious memories. Praying that God will allow me to always remember those days from the past, cherish the love we still possess after 44 years of marriage, and continue to be grateful for every day he blesses us with. Thank you for the joy you brought to my heart today through your words and pictures. Simple pleasures.

Hi Sherry,
How sweet that your husband included the Love Is comics in the letters he sent to you. You are married just one year longer than my husband and I. Thank you for writing to share your memories!

Hello Tandis,
I know very little about the sweet cartoon comic drawings shared in this post. I remember collecting the books back, probably in the mid-1970’s. I just did a quick check and there are some books currently available on eBay if you have access.
There is a little information at the bottom of the post that tells a little abut the author.
Hope this is helpful!
Kindly, Lorraine

I remember these cartoons. You have a good collection. Better yet were your own words about how you have loved each other through the events that life brings over the years.

Those are lovely cartoons. How great that you kept them all these years.
I have a scrapbook or two of our dating years, filled with old ticket stubs, paper napkins, and crumbling foliage. Wonderful memories and we're still in love today. Truly a blessing from the Lord.
Enjoy your day!

That was lovely.
We are certainly on the 'same page'. I was sorting through a drawer early in the week, getting ready to re-purpose a little side table. The drawer was full of letters I'd written to The Great Dane from 1970 – 1973, during our 'courtship'. There were some of these cartoons in some of the envelopes.

I remember those cartoons, and think I might have a few of them tucked away in a box myself. I love the background story behind this, so sweet. Hope you have a wonderful Valentine's Day.

What a special way to share your 39 years together with us! I never saw these cartoons, but I do know she has it right. Through it all, you two exemplify the amazing love and grace of our God! I know that I am truly blessed by every visit here, and I see you, your husband and your family giving us glimpses of the I Cor. 13 love of God.
Happy Anniversary!
