How many kings stepped down from their thrones? How many lords have abandoned their homes? How many greats have become the least for me? I hope you can find a moment this busy holiday season to listen to this beautiful song by a group called Downhere.
Thoughts of the a wee Baby lying in a manger with His weary parents all in a stable while animals rest nearby is a familiar Christmas scene. The announcements by the angels, the startled shepherds, the star and the wise men are stories from the bible that fill our hearts this time of year.
Leaving His throne
It is impossible for our human minds to fully comprehend all that Jesus gave up to come to earth. It is even harder to take in why He did it.
I love the words of this song, How Many Kings. It is a very powerful Christmas song that really challenges us to think about the sacrifice that Jesus, King of Kings and Lord of Lords made on our behalf.
Truly, no other king in the history of the world besides Jesus humbled themselves to come off their throne to become one of their own and become the least… for me, for you.
Coming down to earth
Marc Martel, one of the lead singers of Downhere and writer of this song shares his thoughts and inspiration on writing this song:
I am often challenged by the fact that God’s way of doing things often seems to be the opposite of what we would come up with. Instead of the world’s way of coming down to earth, which would involve celebrity, riches, arrogance, our God and Savior chose humility, poverty and the ultimate sacrifice of dying on a cross hanging between two thieves. This completely humbles me as a believer. I’m amazed at how God uses the mundane to save us from our sin and ourselves.
The lyrics and video
Read through the lyrics as you listen to the video. Truly amazing to know that we are so loved that One so great would give so much for broken people like me. Like all of us.
How Many Kings
by Downhere
Follow the star to a place unexpected
Would you believe after all we’ve projected
A child in a manger?
Lowly and small, the weakest of all
Unlikeliest hero, wrapped in his mother’s shawl
Just a child
Is this who we’ve waited for?
(Chorus)
‘Cause how many kings stepped down from their thrones?
How many lords have abandoned their homes?
How many greats have become the least for me?
And how many Gods have poured out their hearts
To romance a world that is torn all apart?
How many Fathers gave up their Sons for me?
Bringing our gifts for the newborn Savior
All that we have, whether costly or meek
Because we believe
Gold for His honor and frankincense for His pleasure
And myrrh for the cross He’ll suffer
Do you believe?
Is this who we’ve waited for?
(Chorus)
‘Cause how many kings stepped down from their thrones?
How many lords have abandoned their homes?
How many greats have become the least for me?
And how many Gods have poured out their hearts
To romance a world that is torn all apart?
How many Fathers gave up their Sons for me?
Only one did that for me
All for me, all for you
All for me, all for you
(Chorus)
All for me, all for you
How many kings step down from their thrones?
How many lords have abandoned their homes?
How many greats have become the least for me?
And how many gods have poured out their hearts
To romance a world that is torn all apart
How many fathers gave up their sons for me?
Only one did that for me
All for me, all for you
All for me, all for you

Adrienne says
Beautiful! This morning our pastor ended his message with this statement: Many babies were born to be kings but only one King was born a baby. The truth reaches deep into my heart as I walk through this Advent season and realize again God’s plan for us.
