Day by day, and with each passing moment,
Strength I find to meet my trials here;
Trusting in my Father’s wise bestowment,
I’ve no cause for worry or for fear.
I was reminded of this beautiful hymn in a book I am currently reading. It has been far too long since I have heard it or sang it. I did not know the history behind the hymn nor the author, Carolina Sandell.
When she was 26, Carolina–or Lina (pronounced Lie-nah) as she liked to be called–experienced a tragedy which profoundly affected the course of her life. She was with her father, a Lutheran pastor, crossing a Swedish lake. Suddenly the ship lurched, and before her eyes, her father was thrown overboard and drowned. Lina had written hymns before, but now she poured out her broken heart in an endless stream of beautiful songs. Her hymns mightily influenced the revival that swept across Scandanavia after l850.

Day by day, and with each passing moment,
Strength I find to meet my trials here;
Trusting in my Father’s wise bestowment,

He, whose heart is kind beyond all measure,
Gives unto each day what He deems best,
Lovingly its part of pain and pleasure,
Mingling toil with peace and rest.
Every day the Lord Himself is near me,
With a special mercy for each hour;
All my cares He fain would bear and cheer me,
He whose name is Counsellor and Pow’r.
The protection of His child and treasure
Is a charge that on Himself He laid;
“As thy days, thy strength shall be in measure,”
This the pledge to me He made.
Help me then, in every tribulation,
So to trust Thy promises, O Lord,
That I lose not faith’s sweet consolation,
Offered me within Thy holy Word.
Help me, Lord, when toil and trouble meeting,
E’er to take, as from a father’s hand,
One by one, the days, the moments fleeting,
Till with Christ the Lord I stand.
As my eyes caught these words of refreshment and truth…it was such a blessing to be reminded of heavenly things! The world and its busyness and goods and bads are ever near to choke out the truth! I love your post and the powers its tells of. Thank you Lorraine! Thats so special.

Lorraine, I have followed your blog for quite a while. You are such a Godly and talented woman. I wish we lived close to each other! Your post today was a blessing. I started singing this hymn as a teenager at a camp run by by a couple in Canada who served the Lord in many ways. I loved singing it. When my first child arrived, she was very colicky and would cry every night from 5-11pm. Nothing soothed her. I would rock and sing "Day by Day", though she was not comforted by it, I was. She is now 43 and still cannot be soothed. She has a personality disorder that has manifested itself more and more strongly through the years. She has three precious children that are most likely going to suffer scars from her anger and disfunction. As all of us around her have. When my heart is breaking, I still sing "Day by Day". Lovely words and beautiful blending of voices. Interesting history of the hymn. There was a very unsettling experience at school on Wednesday so rather than working until June 7th, I'm home trying to tie up loose ends.
