Chloe Picks an Owl Hat. Even though she chose the owl pattern while searching online with me for a hat I would make for her, Chloe’s squeal of delight when she saw her owl hat finished was a hoot!
I surprised her even more by making a pair of hand warmer mitts to match the hat.
The adorable owl hat pattern is shared freely by Sarah on her blog, Repeat Crafter Me.
Her patterns are well written and easy to follow.
Chloe, Cambrie and I had a busy Saturday with a visit to a bakery and a long chat with Santa then some shopping.
No sooner had I buckled her into her car seat, Chloe pulled her hat down over her eyes and promptly fell fast asleep while I loaded the bags of groceries into my trunk. Once home, I scooped her up and carried her to the sofa where she slept soundly by the fireplace.
I actually woke her as the sun was setting so I could get a couple photos before the cloudy day lost all light. This sleepy-eyed girl was still very cooperative 🙂

Crochet Baby Owl Hand Warmer Mitts Pattern
Pattern by With a Grateful Prayer and a Thankful Heart
(shown on a 2 1/2 year old toddler)
Vanna’s Choice worsted weight yarn in colors of choice (shown: green, barley, white, yellow)
4 buttons f
G hook
MITT
Beginning at bottom, with green yarn, Ch 20,
Row 1:
hdc in 2nd ch from hook and each across (19)
Rows 2-8:
Ch 2, turn
hdc in each st across. (19)
Rows 9-11:
Change color (barley)
Repeat 3 more rows (19) end off.
EYES (make 2)
With green, ch 3. Slip stitch to first ch to form circle. Chain 1
6 sc in circle. Change color to white before joining to first single crochet.
Ch 1. 2 sc in same stitch and in each around. Join to first single crochet with slip stitch. Fasten off leaving long tail for sewing eyes to mitt
NOSE;
With yellow, Ch 3. Sc in 1st ch from hook, dc in next, sc in last. Leave long tail for sewing.
ASSEMBLY: (remember to place owl features so that thumb openings are both on the inside edges as the child wears them)
It is easier if the eyes (and buttons) are sewn to the mitt before the side seam is sewn. After eyes are attached, Fold mitt in half and slip stitch with crochet hook (or stitch with matching yarn and a needle) leaving an opening for thumb. (I left the two rows below the barley open)
Feather tufts (make 2)
Cut one 9-inch piece of yard from each of the green, barley and white yarn.
Fold the three pieces of yarn in half; using crochet hook, insert at mitt side edge, from back to front, pull loop through and attach. Trim to about 1-inch.
