I had never heard of a Angel’s Trumpet flower before I saw one at my friends home. I bought one and it is truly a beautiful flower with a lovely fragrance. Now that I have learned that all parts of the Angel’s Trumpet plant are poisonous I won’t be growing it again.
Blooming Angel’s Trumpet
I began to think it would not bloom before the cold weather came.
I was so excited to notice a long, slender pod hanging down from the leaves.
It took a while to unfold and it is just as lovely as I had imagined it would be.
How to grow Angel’s Trumpet
Angel’s Trumpet, or Brugmansia, are easily grown in a moist, fertile, well-drained soil, in sun to part shade, in frost-free climates. They begin to flower in mid to late spring in warm climates and continue into the fall, often continuing as late as early winter in warm conditions. In cool winters, outdoor plants need protection from frost, but the roots are hardier, and may re-sprout in late spring.
My Angel’s Trumpet is growing in a large pot. I would love to bring the plant indoors to winter over. But I will not since all parts of Brugmansia are poisonous. The seeds and leaves are especially dangerous.
The plants are native to tropical regions of South America, along the Andes from Venezuela to northern Chile, and also in south-eastern Brazil. Most Brugmansia are fragrant in the evenings to attract pollinating moths.
Wondering if anyone is familiar with this plant? Have you grown it, let me know!
