Spending on Halloween
With consumers spending billions of dollars each year for candy, decorations and costumes it can become a little overwhelming. Americans like to splurge on Halloween. It is hard to imagine that the total spending for the holiday is in the billions and growing every year.
It is totally fun to give out candy and treats to the the adorable little ones that open their pumpkin buckets and sacks in anticipation of a treat. And it is equally fun for them to shuffle along all dressed up in costume.
Creative Halloween Costumes on a budget
Start by picking a character or animal. What are the characteristics that stand out? Usually for animals it is the ears. Make these from paper or felt attached to a headband. Whiskers and facial features can be applied with makeup, finishing the look. Pajamas, bulky sweaters or hoodies with tights or sweat pants can work for the body. Add spots or other accents to further the appearance of a particular animal.
For human personalities, pay attention to accessories such as scarves, bandannas and jewelry. Items the personality might use like sporting equipment, tools or utensils. These are the details that give recognition. Be sure they aren’t cumbersome or dangerous for the child to carry as they run from house to house.
Sources for supplies for Halloween costumes
Go through items you already have and then head to your local thrift shop. Dollar stores are a great source for inexpensive items. With a particular character in mind, look for accessories that will bring the character to life. Have fun with your kids in the process. You just might surprise yourself with what you come up with!
