As we continue with Advent, I am sharing Names and Titles of Jesus with Bible scripture verses to read and contemplate. This is not an exhaustive list as the are many names of Jesus throughout the Bible.
In the Scriptures, someone’s name had great significance. It wasn’t simply how you identified someone but it was intended to reflect that person’s character and tell something about the person.
The names given to Jesus were significant giving us a picture of what He was like, helping us see him more clearly and know him better.
Names and Titles of Jesus
Almighty ~ “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.” Rev 1:8
Alpha and Omega ~ “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God Rev 1:8
Ancient of days ~ Yes, and from ancient days I am He. Isaiah 43:13
Anointed One ~ After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be put to death and will have nothing. Daniel 9:26
Beloved ~ Behold, My Servant whom I have chosen; My Beloved in whom My soul is well-pleased; I will put My Spirit upon Him, And He shall proclaim justice to the Gentiles. (Matthew 12:18 quoting Isaiah 42:1)
Bread of life ~ Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. John 6:35
Bright Morning Star ~ “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.” Revelation 22:16
Chief cornerstone ~ built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. Ephesians 2:20
Christ ~ Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God. Romans 1:1
Dayspring ~ Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us. Luke 1:78
Divine Son ~ He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” 2 Peter 1:17
Everlasting Father ~ For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6
Faithful and True Witness ~ “To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation. Revelation 3:14
God ~ Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” John 20:28
Good Shepherd ~ “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. John 10:14; “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me. John 10:11
Great High Priest ~ Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Hebrews 4:14-16
Holy One ~ Our Redeemer—the Lord Almighty is his name— is the Holy One of Israel. Isaiah 47:4
I Am ~ “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” John 8:58
Immanuel ~ “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”). Matthew 1:23
Jesus ~”you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins” Matthew 1:21
Jesus of Nazareth ~ “Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) John 18:5
Judge ~ Don’t grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door! James 5:9
King ~ and sang the song of God’s servant Moses and of the Lamb: “Great and marvelous are your deeds, Lord God Almighty. Just and true are your ways, King of the nations. Revelation 15:3
King of Kings ~ On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Revelation 19:16
Lamb of God ~ The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! John 1:29
Light of the world ~ When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12
Line of Judah ~ “Listen to this, you descendants of Jacob, you who are called by the name of Israel and come from the line of Judah, you who take oaths in the name of the Lord and invoke the God of Israel— but not in truth or righteousness— Isaiah 48:1
Living water ~ Lord, you are the hope of Israel; all who forsake you will be put to shame. Those who turn away from you will be written in the dust because they have forsaken the Lord, the spring of living water. Jeremiah 17:13
Lord ~ “Then I asked, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ “ ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,’ the Lord replied. Acts 26:15
Lord of Lords ~ On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: king of kings and lord of lords. Revelation 19:16
Messiah ~ “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.” Mark 8:29
Mighty One ~ for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is his name. Luke 1:49
Only Begotten Son ~ For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16
Our peace ~ For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility. Ephesians 2:14
Prince of Peace ~ For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6
Redeemer ~ Our Redeemer ~ the Lord Almighty is his name— is the Holy One of Israel. Isaiah 47:4
Resurrection and Life ~ Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die. John 11:25
Rock ~ May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. Psalm 19:14
Savior ~ …and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior. Luke 1:47
Shepherd ~ Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep. Hebrews 13:20; “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. John 10:11
Shiloh ~ The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be. Genesis 49:10
Son ~ And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” Matthew 3:17
Son of God ~ I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. 1 John 5:13
Son of Man ~ And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man. John 5:27
The Gate ~ I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. John 10:9
Truth Way Life ~ Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6
