The bible verse, For Unto Us a Child is Born is from Isaiah 6:9 and is a familiar verse this time of year as we celebrate the birth of God’s Son, Jesus.

Scripture verses from Isaiah are presented in a most wondrous composition in Georg Friedrich Händel’s, Messiah and a highlight every Christmas to many. It lifts the spirit and fills the heart with overwhelming joy and spontaneous praise.
The Glorious History of Handel’s Messiah
We had the wonderful opportunity to visit the British Library during both of our London trips. Housed here, among many other treasures, is the original manuscript of Handel’s Messiah. Photo are not permitted in the library but it was quite a thrill to view these pieces. To see a beautiful slideshow of the pages from the draft score of Handel’s Messiah, created by the British Library, click Turning the Pages.
Did you know George Frideric Handel’s Messiah was originally an Easter performance first presented on April 13, 1742? Handel was born in Halle, Germany, into a religious, affluent household. His father, Georg Händel, a celebrated surgeon in northern Germany, wanted his son to study the law. The Duke of Weissenfels, heard the prodigy, then barely 11, playing the organ and recognized the boy’s genius, likely influencing the doctor’s decision to allow his son to become a musician. By 18, Handel had composed his first opera, Almira, initially performed in Hamburg in 1705.
The Metropolitan Chorus
To listen to an interesting conversation about the annual performance of Handel’s Messiah with Barry Hemphill, director of The Metropolitan Chorus, in Washington, DC, click Sing along with the Messiah. I think you will enjoy it.
I created this FREE Christmas 5 x 7-inch printable with the words of Isaiah 9:6. It is lovely for framing and holiday display as well as a beautiful reminder of the reason for the season. I think it makes a thoughtful gift and plan to give several to friends this year.
For unto us a Child is born
(Handel’s Messiah)
For unto us a child is born,
To us a son is giv’n,
The government shall rest on him,
Th’ anointed one from heav’n.
His name is Wonderful Counselor,
The Mighty God is he,
The Everlasting Father,
The humble Prince of Peace.
The increase of his government
And peace shall never end,
He’ll reign on David’s ancient throne
As ruler of all men.
Upheld with justice and righteousness,
Forever his kingdom will last,
The zeal of the Lord God Most High
Will bring these things to pass.
Lord Jesus, come now and reign in me,
Be Lord of my life this hour.
Come be my Counselor and my God,
My source of wisdom and power.
Watch o’er me with your Father care,
My heart and my mind, fill with peace.
I worship you, my Lord and King,
My praise will never cease.
