Colorful autumn days are passing and soon the trees will drop their leaves. I’m trying to be intentional to catch the last of these beautiful days and vivid beauty before it is gone until next year. Come Little Leaves is a sweet poem by George Cooper that captures the scene of this time of year.
Dresses of red and gold
Come Little Leaves
by George Cooper
“Come, little leaves” said the wind one day,
“Come over the meadows with me, and play;
Put on your dresses of red and gold;
Summer is gone, and the days grow cold.”
Soon as the leaves heard the wind’s loud call,
Down they came fluttering, one and all;
Over the brown fields they danced and flew,
Singing the soft little songs they knew.
Dancing and whirling the little leaves went;
Winter had called them and they were content
Soon fast asleep in their earthly beds,
The snow laid a soft mantle over their heads.
Animals in autumn
I only need look out the window to see the busyness of animals preparing for the coming months. The bushy-tailed squirrel is constantly foraging and gathering his winter provisions.
A vibrant blue jay plucked berries from nearby bushes.
A rainy day didn’t stop a male and female cardinal from finding seeds among the branches of our eastern red bud tree.
Autumn chores
Even humans have lots to do as the cold days of winter approach.
These four guys hauled a cord and a half of wood from the driveway to the back patio and stacked it neatly for use in the wood-burning stove through the winter.
Our grandchildren spent the day with us so their mom and dad could enjoy a day together. Halfway through the job we paused for pics.
and jumped in leaves…
and went for rides 🙂
