Originally published December 2017. Updated November 2025.
The familiar words “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given” from Isaiah 9:6 have brought comfort and hope to God’s people for centuries. At Christmas, this beautiful prophecy reminds us that Jesus came into the world with purpose and love, bringing peace to hearts that long for Him.
Advent Hope in Isaiah 9:6
Isaiah spoke these words during a dark and uncertain time in Israel’s history. Yet God gave His people a promise. A child would come. A Son would be given. He would carry the government on His shoulders and would rule with wisdom, strength, and lasting peace.
During Advent and Christmas, these titles point us to who Jesus is in our daily lives. He is our Wonderful Counselor when we need guidance. He is our Mighty God when we feel weak or unsure. He is our Everlasting Father who never leaves us. He is our Prince of Peace who brings calm to weary hearts.
Keeping this verse in view during December is a gentle reminder of the hope Christ brings.
Scripture verses from Isaiah are presented in a most wondrous composition in Georg Friedrich Händel’s Messiah and a highlight every Christmas to many. It lifts the spirit and fills the heart with overwhelming joy and spontaneous praise.
The Story Behind Handel’s Messiah
Many people first learned Isaiah 9:6 through the soaring music of Handel’s Messiah. The chorus “For unto us a Child is born” is one of the most cherished and familiar pieces of the Christmas season.
During trips to London, we visited the British Library and were able to see the original manuscript of Messiah. Standing in front of those handwritten pages was a special moment, knowing how this music has encouraged people for so many years. Photographing the manuscript is not permitted, but the library has created a beautiful online feature called “Turning the Pages” where you can look through a digital version of the score.
Hymn Text
Here is a lovely hymn that reflects the joy of Christ’s coming and pairs beautifully with this verse.
For unto us a Child is born
(Handel’s Messiah)
For unto us a child is born,
To us a son is giv’n,
The government shall rest on him,
Th’ anointed one from heav’n.
His name is Wonderful Counselor,
The Mighty God is he,
The Everlasting Father,
The humble Prince of Peace.
The increase of his government
And peace shall never end,
He’ll reign on David’s ancient throne
As ruler of all men.
Upheld with justice and righteousness,
Forever his kingdom will last,
The zeal of the Lord God Most High
Will bring these things to pass.
Lord Jesus, come now and reign in me,
Be Lord of my life this hour.
Come be my Counselor and my God,
My source of wisdom and power.
Watch o’er me with your Father care,
My heart and my mind, fill with peace.
I worship you, my Lord and King,
My praise will never cease.
Did you know George Frideric Handel’s Messiah was originally an Easter performance first presented on April 13, 1742? Handel was born in Halle, Germany, into a religious, affluent household. His father, Georg Händel, a celebrated surgeon in northern Germany, wanted his son to study the law. The Duke of Weissenfels, heard the prodigy, then barely 11, playing the organ and recognized the boy’s genius, likely influencing the doctor’s decision to allow his son to become a musician. By 18, Handel had composed his first opera, Almira, initially performed in Hamburg in 1705.
