DIY Chalkboard Serving Tray with Brushed Metal Finish

By Lorraine

DIY chalkboard serving tray with a brushed metal finish, perfect for gifting, entertaining, or home décor. Easy, elegant, & customizable.

DIY Chalkboard Serving Tray with Brushed Metal Finish

Looking for a creative and elegant DIY project? This brushed-metal look chalkboard serving tray is easy to make and perfect for gifting or entertaining. With just a few supplies and some creative touches,  you can turn a simple wood tray or framed panel into a beautiful, functional piece with the look of brushed metal and the charm of a chalkboard surface.

Supplies You’ll Need

To make your own chalkboard tray, gather the following materials:

  • Unfinished wood tray or a framed panel (mirror backing removed)

  • Silver acrylic craft paint (two coordinating shades)

  • Black acrylic paint

  • Satin water-based varnish

  • Primer (optional, if painting over glass)
  • Chalkboard paint

  • Sponge brush or small paint roller

  • Sandpaper or sanding block

  • Sturdy handles

  • Painter’s tape (optional for clean edges)

  • Brown craft paper and double-sided tape (for the back)

  • Screwdriver or drill for attaching handles

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prep the Surface

Start by removing any mirror or artwork from the frame if needed. Sand the wood surface until smooth, then wipe it clean. This gives your paint a good surface to adhere to.

2. Paint the Brushed Metal Frame

Use both shades of silver acrylic paint, lightly brushing them together to create visual depth and variation. This layered technique gives the wooden frame the appearance of brushed metal. While still damp, add subtle streaks of black paint, then rub gently with a rag to enhance the effect. Let dry, then seal with a coat of satin varnish

3. Add the Chalkboard Surface

Apply three coats of chalkboard paint to the center of the tray or panel, letting each coat dry fully. Once cured, season the surface by rubbing the side of a piece of chalk across the board, then wipe it clean with a soft cloth.

4. Attach the Handles

Position and attach handles to each side using screws. Make sure they’re even and secure.

5. Secure the Chalkboard Panel

Once the chalkboard panel is in place, reinforce it with tacks or small nails for a secure fit inside the frame.

6. Finish the Back

For a polished look, cover the back with brown craft paper secured with double-sided tape. This adds a neat, finished appearance—especially if you’re giving it as a gift.

Why You’ll Love This DIY Chalkboard Serving Tray

This project is as practical as it is beautiful. Here’s why it’s a favorite:

  • Versatile gift idea: Great for housewarmings, holidays, or hostess gifts.

  • Customizable: Choose paint colors to match your décor.

  • Functional & fun: Write welcome messages, menus, or quotes directly on the tray.

  • Stylish finish: The brushed-metal frame gives it a sophisticated look.

Tips and Variations

  • Use painter’s tape to keep chalkboard edges clean and sharp.

  • Try different metallic shades—rose gold or pewter—for a unique look.

  • Add felt pads under the tray to protect surfaces.

  • Personalize it with a hand-lettered name or message using a chalk marker.

This DIY chalkboard serving tray brings charm and personality to any home. Whether you’re serving drinks, decorating a shelf, or offering it as a thoughtful gift, this project is a rewarding one that looks far more expensive than it is to make.

Creative Ways to Use Your Chalkboard Tray

This simple project is not only fun to make, it’s versatile, too. Here are a few ways to use your tray around the home:

  • Welcome guests with a handwritten greeting

  • Display a favorite verse, menu, or quote

  • Set up a cozy coffee or tea station

  • Add seasonal charm with themed chalk designs

  • Place near the door for reminders or daily to-dos
