The A-to-Z of God’s Attributes

Do you ever lie down for bed and your thoughts start bouncing all around? Sometimes they are discouraging, overwhelming, or even self-critical. Instead of letting those thoughts take over, shift your focus to the unchanging truth of who God is. His attributes are many and beyond measure. One simple way to reflect on them is to try the A to Z of God’s attributes. Go through the alphabet, naming one of His attributes for each letter. This calming bedtime devotional practice can quiet your mind, draw your heart into worship, and fill your thoughts with gratitude and peace.

Why This Attributes of God List Brings Peace

Negative thoughts can push aside the truths we most need to remember. Reflecting on God’s character traits replaces anxiety with reminders of His faithfulness, love, and power. Naming His attributes one by one gives your mind something life-giving to dwell on. It also gives your spirit something steady to rest in.

Renewing Your Mind with God’s Truth

Romans 12:2
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Transformation starts when we allow God to reshape our thoughts. A renewed mind isn’t swayed by the pull of the world but is anchored in His truth, helping us recognize and follow His will.

As our minds are renewed, what we choose to think about matters deeply.

How to Begin Your Alphabetical List of God’s Attributes

  • Find a quiet moment. This could be at bedtime, during prayer, or when you need to refocus during the day.
  • Start with the letter A. Name an attribute of God, such as Almighty.
  • Move through the alphabet slowly. Pause to reflect on what each word reveals about His nature.
  • Let each attribute prompt a short prayer of thanks or praise.

B – Builder of all things
C – Compassionate
D – Deliverer
E – Eternal
F – Faithful
G – Gracious
H – Holy
I – Immutable (unchanging)
J – Just
K – King of kings
L – Loving
M – Merciful
N – Name above all names
O – Omnipresent
P – Protector
Q – Quick to forgive
R – Redeemer
S – Shepherd
T – Truth
U – Unfailing
V – Victorious
W – Wise
X – eXalted
Y – Yahweh
Z – Zealous for His people

Ways to Use This Reflection Activity

Write your own attributes of God list in a journal. Add Scripture verses for each attribute.
Create a new list every few weeks. Watch your awareness of God’s character grow.
Share this alphabetical list of God’s attributes with your family, a Bible study group, or a prayer partner.
Pray through the list. Turn each attribute into a sentence of worship or a reminder for the day.

Scripture to Anchor This Practice

Philippians 4:8 says, “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think about such things.”

Filling your thoughts with the truth of who God is will strengthen your faith. It will also steady your heart, even on the hardest days.
