I can’t be sure of what was ailing the oven but I think I have a clue. One evening as we were eating dinner we heard a strange high-pitch sound coming from the control panel on the back of the stove. It hummed for a minute or two and then stopped. I had been steaming corn on-the-cob on the back burner and though there was a lid on the pot, I am wondering if moisture got into the control panel and caused it to malfunction.
My husband pulled the stove out to investigate but there was no response. (The stove top continued to work). Thinking I would be using the toaster oven and making smallish meals for the foreseeable future we decided several days later to give it one more try.
To our great joy, it worked!
Perhaps it just needed to dry out.
whatever… I am back in business in the kitchen 🙂
This story reminds me of what happened to Abbey a couple of weeks ago. She was using her ipod and accidentally dropped it into the dogs water bowl. How sad she was! Even though it was not fully immersed and she immediately pulled it out, it was not working. She googled for information as to what to do and several suggestions were to just wait for it to dry out. That is just what she did and after several days it was working. How happy she is!
Below is a recipe for Chocolate Anise Biscotti from one of my favorite chefs ~ Giada de Laurentiis
Begin by creaming together butter and sugar.
Add eggs one at a time.
Add dry ingredients just until combined.
Form into a 16″ x 3″ log.
After the first baking.
Allow to cool and slice into 1/2″ cookies.
Bake another 15 minutes.
I added some melted chocolate.
Chocolate Anise Cookies

- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon ground anise seed
- 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line a heavy large baking sheet with parchment paper. Whisk the flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl to blend. Using an electric mixer, beat the sugar and butter in a large bowl to blend. Beat in the eggs 1 at a time. Add the flour mixture and beat just until blended. Add the ground anise seed and mix well. Stir in the chocolate chips. Form the dough into a 16-inch-long, 3-inch-wide log. Transfer the log to the prepared baking sheet. Bake until light golden, about 30 minutes. Cool 30 minutes. Place the log on the cutting board. Using a serrated knife, cut the log on a diagonal into 1/2- to 3/4-inch-thick slices. Arrange the cookies cut side down on the baking sheet. Bake the cookies until pale golden, about 15 minutes. Transfer the cookies to a rack and cool completely.
